On April 7, 1966, a B-57B Canberra (tail number 52-1530, call sign "Yellow Bird 12") was on a strike mission over Savannakhet Province, Laos, when, while making its pass over the target, the aircraft crashed and exploded at (GC) XD 752 030. No parachutes were seen to emerge from the aircraft before it went down. No ground search and rescue was attempted due to the hostile presence in the area. Eventually, the remains of “Yellow Bird 12’s” pilot were returned to U.S. custody and identified; however, the navigator was not located.
Captain Thomas Taylor Walker, who joined the U.S. Air Force from Oregon, was a member of the 8th Bomber Squadron, 6252nd Tactical Fighter Wing. He was the navigator aboard “Yellow Bird 12” when it went down, and was lost along with the aircraft. His remains have not been located or identified following the incident. Today, Captain Walker is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
