On July 2, 1967, members of Company B of the 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division engaged a North Vietnamese Army force in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam, in the vicinity of (GC) YD 135 725. After the battle concluded on July 4, U.S. forces identified and recovered the remains of thirty-five of the thirty-six men lost during the fighting, as well as several wounded. Only one individual remains unaccounted for following the incident.
Lance Corporal Wayne Vaster Wilson, who joined the U.S. Marine Corps from North Carolina, was a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, and was the only man lost during the battle who remains unaccounted for. He was last seen during the fighting on July 2, and further attempts to locate him were unsuccessful. Following the incident, the Marine Corps promoted Lance Corporal Wilson to the rank of Staff Sergeant. Today, Staff Sergeant Wilson is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
