On July 20, 1981, the Central Identification Laboratory-Hawaii (CILHI)
identified the remains of Captain Richard Haven Van Dyke,
missing from the Vietnam War.
Captain Van Dyke entered the U.S. Air Force from Utah and was a
member of the 80th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On September 11,
1968, he piloted an F-4 Phantom II (tail number 66-8752, call
sign "Stormy 01") on a forward air control mission over Quang
Binh Province, North Vietnam. While in the target area, the
aircraft was hit and damaged by anti-aircraft fire but Capt Van
Dyke continued flying toward the coast, and "Stormy 01"
eventually crashed into the sea. Capt Van Dyke ejected before
the aircraft went down and was captured by enemy forces upon
landing. He was interned at a detention facility near Hanoi
where he died on or about September 22, and was buried nearby.
After the war, the Vietnamese government repatriated human
remains to the U.S. that analysts eventually identified as those
of Capt Van Dyke.
Captain Van Dyke is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at
the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
