On February 5, 1966, an SH-3A Sea King (bureau number unknown) with fifteen crew and passengers crashed in the South China Sea while en route to the fleet oiler USS Navasota (AO 106). Search and rescue efforts recovered twelve of the men from the helicopter, but the last three could not be located following the crash.

Shipfitter (Metalsmith) Third Class Dan Daily McConnaughhay, who entered the U.S. Navy from California, served aboard the Navasota and was aboard this Sea King at the time of its loss. He was not recovered and remains unaccounted for. Today, Shipfitter (Metalsmith) Third Class McConnaughhay is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
