MAJ GEORGE BRUCE MENGES

Return to Service Member Profiles

On April 30, 1982, the Central Identification Laboratory-Hawaii (CILHI, now DPAA) identified the remains of Major George Bruce Menges, missing from the Vietnam War.

Major Menges entered the U.S. Air Force from Ohio and served with the 25th Tactical Air Support Squadron. On January 2, 1967, he piloted an O-1F Bird Dog (serial number 57-2858) on a visual reconnaissance mission over Laos. During the mission, the Bird Dog was shot down, killing Maj Menges. Enemy presence in the area prevented search efforts at the time. However, in 1980, his remains were recovered by U.S. authorities, and in 1982, analysts were able to identify them.

Major Menges is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
