On March 31, 1977, the Central Identification Lab-Hawaii (CILHI, now
DPAA) identified the remains of Commander Thomas Carl Kolstad,
missing from the Vietnam War.
Commander Kolstad, who joined the U.S. Navy from Minnesota,
served with the 6th Reconnaissance
Attack Squadron (Heavy), embarked aboard the USS Constellation
(CVA-64). On October 22, 1966, he piloted an RA-5C Vigilante
(bureau number 150830) on a reconnaissance mission photographing
railroad infrastructure in the vicinity of Hai Doung, North
Vietnam. During the mission, the Vigilante was shot down and CDR
Kolstad was killed. Hostile presence in the area inhibited
search efforts during the war. In 1976, the Vietnamese
government repatriated remains which were later identified as
those of CDR Kolstad.
