On August 2, 1996, the Central Identification Lab-Hawaii (CILHI, now
DPAA) identified the remains of Lieutenant Commander William
Blue Klenert, missing from the Vietnam War.
Lieutenant Commander Klenert, who joined the U.S. Navy from New
York, served with the 6th Reconnaissance
Attack Squadron (Heavy), embarked aboard the USS Constellation
(CVA-64). On October 22, 1966, he served as the radar navigator
on board an RA-5C Vigilante (bureau number 150830) on a
reconnaissance mission photographing railroad infrastructure in
the vicinity of Hai Doung, North Vietnam. During the mission,
the Vigilante was shot down and LCDR Klenert was killed. Hostile
presence in the area inhibited search efforts during the war. In
1976, the Vietnamese government repatriated remains which were
later identified as those of LCDR Klenert.
