On October 14, 1988, the Central Identification
Laboratory-Hawaii (CILHI, now DPAA) identified the remains of
Major Robert Clifton Edmunds Jr., missing from the Vietnam War.
Major Edmunds entered the U.S. Air Force from Virginia and
served with the 469th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On October 27,
1968, he piloted an F-105D Thunderchief (tail number 62-4264,
call sign "Scuba 03") that took off from Korat Royal Thai Air
Force Base, Thailand, on an armed reconnaissance mission over
North Vietnam. As the aircraft dove at the target, it was hit by
enemy ground fire and crashed in Quang Binh Province, killing
Maj Edmunds. Search efforts failed to locate the crash site, and
his body was not recovered at the time of his loss. However, a
Vietnamese citizen eventually turned over a set of remains that
U.S. analysts were able to identify as those of Maj Edmunds.
Major Edmunds is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at
the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
