The T-6 was hit by anti-aircraft fire while over the "Iron Triangle" area, and the observer parachuted out and was later rescued by a helicopter. The pilot was still inside the aircraft when it crashed, and an observer in another aircraft saw that the pilot was thrown clear of the wreck, attempt to rise but fell back to the ground and was immediately surrounded by enemy soldiers.
