A notorious bigamist — pegged by New Jersey authorities as a lifelong
scammer who's likely to strike again — is slated to be sprung from a
Garden State prison just months into a three-year sentence, The Post has
learned.
"I was told he'll be moved to a halfway
house in March," said Diana Barber, one of at least four women who
were duped into marrying the convicted con, William Michael Barber.
"I just don't understand how it could
happen."
Neither can the silver-haired schemer's latest
wife and victim, Joyce Reynolds, who was alerted to the planned move in
a Jan. 14 e-mail from Diana.
"It's outrageous," Reynolds said.
"I am angry, I'm frightened, I'm stunned."
A spokeswoman for the New Jersey Department of
Corrections could not confirm any planned move.
Reynolds — who estimates Barber, 53, bilked
her out of more than $60,000 — helped put her shady ex behind bars
after he was busted in June in Wharton, N.J., on a slew of criminal
fraud charges, including falsifying his marriage license to her.
"I was lied to by Michael, and then I put
my faith in the judicial system, and look what's happened," said
Reynolds, who was part of negotiations for the guilty plea Barber copped
in September.
"I feel like I've been duped all over
again."
Barber — who has 19 aliases and a 35-year,
six-state criminal history that includes two prison stints and a bigamy
conviction — pleaded guilty to filing a false marriage license.
In return, New Jersey prosecutors dropped a
dozen other criminal charges. Barber was sentenced in October to three
years in prison.
"I was led to believe, during the
negotiations, that he'd spend at least 18 months in jail," Reynolds
said of her ex, who, records show, is now in minimum security at Bayside
State Prison in south Jersey and is eligible for parole April 21.
"If they let him out to a halfway house in
March, he'll be allowed to get a job, he'll have access to a
computer," she said. "Within a week, he'll have a plan to con
someone else — if he doesn't already."
Diana Barber — who is owed $50,000 in child
support from the con — said she was told of the planned move by her
Missouri child-support caseworker in mid-January.
"She was informed by New Jersey officials
and told me," Diana said.
A Corrections spokeswoman said she could not
confirm Diana's information but said there is "nothing" in
Barber's file that suggests an imminent move.
However, another spokesman said that given
Barber's approaching parole-eligibility date, the information given to
Diana Barber might be valid.
After his latest arrest, it emerged that Barber
had served a six-year sentence in a Missouri prison for passing bad
checks and did time at Leavenworth, Kansas, for desertion from the Army.
Reynolds, who has been in contact with Barber's
other victimized wives, said they're all convinced Barber will
"vanish" if he's released to a halfway house.
"Let's face it, he was a deserter from the
Army — to walk away from a halfway house, for him, that's
nothing," Reynolds said.
At Barber's New Jersey sentencing, Assistant
Morris County Prosecutor Joseph D'Onofrio said, "There's a saying,
'You can't teach an old dog new tricks.' Mr. Barber has committed these
tricks his whole life. When he gets out, he'll probably go back to the
same thing."
Meanwhile, Reynolds has a restraining order
against the con, but puts little faith in the piece of paper.
"I'm frightened of him, and scared for my
family," she said. "There's no telling how angry he might be.
"And it won't be hard for him to find me
— that's what he does."

was a way that legislature in regards to medals, and people to fraud
people would get stiffer sentences. ... Mr. Barber sullied the
good veterans of this country. Being a deserter and then claiming he
was better than the honorable ones, really got to me. I had a few
friends that died in Vietnam, and one of my cousins died from Agent
Orange. It just seems a tragedy that the government is so slow to
respond to a lot of our issues. ...Con men have always gotten the
minimum, it is just that we need to do something to stop the repeat
offenders...Mr. Barber has been doing this for over 35 years..and
getting the bare minimum. He has conned people in over 23 states.
That is almost half of the United States. I would like to
believe that love is stronger than hate and lies. It is just
that in the case of Mr. Barber, it seems his lies have always
triumphed. He did plea guilty, but it will come out of this smelling
like a rose... There is no telling how many victims this man had. I
hope that Missouri will fight to extradite him, so that he serves

New Jersey cops have arrested an alleged serial bigamist
and con man who is believed to have married at least 12
women, cheating many out of their life savings, reported The
New York Post.
But not before he convinced detectives for a while that
they had the wrong man.

(KSDK - St. Louis) -- A woman who lives in the St. Louis
area says her ex-husband lied to her for six years. Police say
William Barber has established a pattern of lying and falsifying
documents to change his identity.
Barber is in a New Jersey jail accused of using a false name and
social security number on his marriage license. Police say Barber
finds women, takes advantage of them financially, and moves on.
We talked with a local woman who was married to Barber and we
spoke with the couple's biological son.
"I served him the wrong drink and he laughed and came back to
the establishment the next day." William Barber charmed the
woman we agreed not to identify. She worked at a St. Louis
restaurant in 1986. A few months later they were married and not
long after there were problems.

Additional charges pending for man in marriage fraud case

MORRISTOWN, N.J. (AP) Authorities on Wednesday said they plan to
bring additional charges against a man accused of filing a false
marriage license as they also try to determine whether he was married to
more than one woman at the same time.
William Barber, 54, is being held at the Morris County Jail, accused
of using a bogus marriage license to marry his current wife. He also has
at least four ex-wives, 12 aliases, four dates of birth and numerous
fake Social Security numbers, authorities said.
At least some of the marriages might not have been legally dissolved,
said Assistant Morris County Prosecutor Joseph D'Onofrio. That is part
of an ongoing investigation into Barber's past, D'Onofrio said following
a brief court hearing.
During the hearing, D'Onofrio told a judge, ``There are additional
charges the state anticipates filing regarding falsifying documents.''...

Jun. 21, 2005 - When Joyce Reynolds met Michael Barber in an
Internet chat room five years ago, they clicked almost immediately.
"He was a romantic. He was sensitive," Reynolds said.
"He said the right things. He said exactly what I wanted to
hear."
Barber said he was a pediatric surgeon and a Vietnam veteran. When he
flew out to meet Reynolds in New Jersey a few months into their online
romance, he said he wanted to marry her. They had only been in the same
state for three hours, but Reynolds said yes.
"I fell in love at the moment when I saw him walk through the
terminal at the airport," Reynolds said. "There was no doubt in
my mind."
Despite warnings from her family that she was moving too fast, Reynolds
married Barber in January 2001..... |

This is an ex-wife of
William Michael Barber. I was married to his from 2-86 through 10-91.
He was married and
divorced to me under the name of Christopher William Barber, III.
So these are a few more
alias he went by back durring those times . Christopher
William MIchael Barber, Christopher Wm. Barber, III, William
Christopher, Christopher James, and Christopher
Michael.
For
the last year and half we were seperated pending a divorce. Durring our
marriage he continually passed bad checks, forged my name to one of my
personal checks for $18,000.00: putting me thru all kinds of grief to get
out of that. He used my vehicle once while passing a bad check, and
after the divorce when my vehicle broke down, and police ran plates I ws
picked up for his passing of bad checks, and spent a night and day in a
filthy, infested jail cell!!!!
I know he lied
about alot of things in the Last Man's Club in St. Louis. He has both of
his legs in entirety. He purchased many of his metals and uniforms from a
place here in St. Louis County. I have a sealed copy of his original birth
certificate . He had his family in such despair, his own parents, brother,
sister and first son disowned him.
I was the one that led
the authorities to him in Texas after they questioned me and showed me a
rap sheet 17 pages long. That is when I learned what such a Con-Man he was
and obviously still is. He was just arrested about 6 weeks ago on
child support issues . The state he lives in did not even enforce the
arrear monies , only the current. He scamed me out of over 50,000.00 in
support by hiding under different names and social security numbers.
The man has no ounce of
humanity in his being. He cares only for what he can gain and will stop at
no measures to obtain it. If for any reason you want to print any of this
it is fine with me, His old business adventures cause me a bankruptcy,
some times my pride. But I thank God every day that I detached him
from my and my son's life. His son refers to him as "the sperm
donor". |

A con artist who met divorced
women through personal ads sweet-talked women in St. Louis County
out of thousands of dollars by claiming to be an investment broker,
police said Tuesday.
"He told them he could double their money, but when he got
their money, that's the last they saw of him," said Detective

Here is some of the evidence that I have on you.
I can't believe that you think you can keep on carrying on with
your con game. If you had had the courage to face up to the truth
with me this could have gone a different way but, you are a true
coward as all cons are. The only reason you have not sent your
lawyer to tell me to cease my actions is because you know that I
do have the proof I need to back up what I have said and written.
We could have left Joyce in place as I told those that called me
but, you would have had to be removed from the Corporate structure
because of your colorful background. This company will not get
Government contracts with you as the CEO or any other position
within the company.
Now that all of this has happened it has raised a lot of flags for
quite a few law agencies that have you in their sights. You should
have cut and run but you are much easier to find sitting where you
are..... I guess they call that arrogance.
You are quite a chicken shit when you wont even call me back but
you tell everyone that you have tried. I guess you forget that I
can have your numbers run and prove that you did not try to call
me. What did you think when you entered the world of investigators
that hunt for criminals? Did you really think that you would not
raise some flags? Did you honestly think that someone would not
find out about you?
My deepest regret is to all of the fine people that are with FRTF
and fell for your Con game. Is their not a shred of humanity left
in your soul? I guess you have already answered that question!
With your cowardice in mind and your lack of integrity and
decency, I will inform the rest of the industry of the documents in
hand and, you leave me no other choice but to inform all of the
clients that we have by sending them a package with all of the
information.
I was really wishing to salvage this but, you would rather take
