from the TV interview:

Steve Robinson, a former SEAL who literally wrote the book on imposters, wrote to Pohlman stating Timothy Ray Anderson was never a Navy SEAL.

When Pohlman went back to confront him, Anderson admitted to the truth.

"Were you a Navy Seal?" Pohlman asked.

"No," Anderson answered.

"Do you remember what I asked you the last time?" Pohlman asked.

"Yes," Anderson answered.

"Do you remember what you told me?" Pohlman asked

Anderson said, "I said yes."

Local Vets Pose As Former POWs

POSTED: 4:19 pm EST November 13, 2008
UPDATED: 7:56 pm EST November 13, 2008

CLEVELAND -- America is the "home of the brave." But not all who claim to be our nation's heroes are.

In our NewsChannel5 investigation we introduce you to three local veterans and unravel their real war stories.

Timothy "Doc" Anderson is a veteran and an active member of the Parma post of the Disabled American Veterans.

Anderson's been pictured with some impressive medals, including one given only to members of the Elite Team of Navy SEALs.

"I operated with SEAL Team 2," Anderson said.

At his home on the west side, Anderson told Chief Investigator Duane Pohlman all about his Navy SEAL experience.

But according to the POW Network -- a group dedicated to hunting down false claims -- Anderson's story simply isn't true......

Claims Navy SEAL, Purple Heart. Claims his son is also a Navy SEAL. {Son did not complete nor graduate BUDs training.]

Claims Navy Cross

Tim Anderson received a letter of being considered for the Navy Cross for his past service.

His Wife told me that Doc got the Navy Cross in her excitement......

Afterwards, immediately following the release of the Newsletter, Doc told me "Not" to put him in anything like this anymore and I apologized and agreed, but Doc clearly stated to me and to everyone that he didn't receive the Navy Cross, just the letter.

Please pass this information along to INQUIRER in response to the inquiry regarding Mr. TIMOTHY RAY “DOC” ANDERSON and his claims of being a US Navy SEAL.

To Whom It May Concern:
I greatly appreciate your interest in upholding the honor of the US Navy SEAL Teams, and your search for the TRUTH. Before answering your questions I must make clear that I am a private individual, not affiliated with the US Dept. of Defense or any other government organization. I am one of about a dozen men in America who possess a copy of the SEAL Database, a comprehensive and regularly updated listing of all men who trained and served with the Naval Special Warfare units (SEALs, UDT, NCDU, S&R) from the end of WWII to the present day. I also have access to archival sources who can verify/deny claims of service DURING WWII. As a former US Navy SEAL myself, I am fully familiar with the NSW training program and the standard operating procedures used by the Teams, as well as an in-depth personal knowledge of many of the ‘insider’ events and incidents which UDT “Frogmen” and SEALs offer as a part of their bona fides. My efforts to expose SEAL imposters are performed free of charge, as a service to the public, and in honor of my SEAL Teammates who gave their lives in service to our nation… men who truly earned the right to the title “US NAVY SEAL” but who are no longer able to stand forward in defense of their honor, their reputations, and their TEAMs.

If the name you provided is spelled correctly, I do NOT find a listing in the SEAL database of successful graduates for anyone named TIMOTHY RAY “DOC” ANDERSON. I have also examined possible alternate spellings, and names with similar pronunciations. In the entirety of the SEAL Database (end of WWII to the present day) there are thirty-three (33) men listed with the last name “ANDERSON” and two (2) men listed with the last name “ANDERSEN”.
None (NONE!) of those men has the first or middle name “Timothy”. We also carry a listing of all Navy Hospital Corpsmen who ever served with the SEAL Teams, Mr. TIMOTHY RAY “DOC” ANDERSON is not one of them.

Unless he has undertaken the unlikely action of a legal name change (an action for which there would be court documentation) since his claimed attendance at BUD/S training, and based upon the information you have provided, I can state conclusively that neither TIMOTHY RAY ANDERSON nor TIMOTHY RAY ANDERSON II has EVER COMPLETED SEAL training, and neither man is now, or ever was a Navy SEAL.

It is quite common for those making fraudulent SEAL claims to cite a “secret” training class, “special selection and skills which allowed them to bypass BUD/S training”, or “secret missions” as an explanation for the lack of military documentation to back up their stories. They also tend to claim their military records are “sealed” and cannot be accessed. I would caution you that despite anything the man might have said, there are NO secret SEALs. Before any classified operations may be undertaken, a man must first successfully complete the totally unclassified BUD/S Training program. No one gets to the SEAL Teams without completing this training; there are NO EXCEPTIONS! The graduates of that training program are listed in the SEAL database – an unclassified document which is nonetheless considered “highly sensitive” and therefore not available for general public circulation. There have been and will continue to be secret missions, but there are NO secret SEALs… we know them all.

When members of the Naval Special Warfare community meet others who claim similar service, but whom they do not recognize, there is a conversational exchange of information that establishes the bona fides of each to the other. There is no set formula for this exchange, nor for the information that is exchanged, but it ALWAYS takes place, and the REAL Naval Special Warfare members can ALWAYS spot a phony as a result of this exchange. If you have an opportunity to speak with the man at some point in the future, I might suggest that you to ask Mr. TIMOTHY RAY ANDERSON (Sr. or Jr.) these questions:

(1) Since there is no listing in the SEAL Database for the name you are currently using, what name did you use during SEAL training?

(2) What was his BUD/S Class Number? (NB: No SEAL ever forgets the class number he shouted all day long, every day, for 6 months)

(3) Where did his training take place? (NB: Training has been conducted at several locations over the years; different portions in different places)

(4) When did he graduate from Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training? (i.e. a specific graduation DATE)

There are many other questions which could be asked to further establish the level of veracity or untruth regarding his claims, such as asking for the names of other members of his graduating class, but those basic questions are absolutes. The answers to those questions are totally UNCLASSIFIED, and every real SEAL will gladly provide that substantiating information upon request, although you will be very likely be told that the information is either classified or sensitive and cannot be provided, or you will be given some totally bogus information. You already know that the man is an imposter, but this specific inquiry will let HIM know that you are aware of his duplicity. At that point you will have the option of telling him that you “have reported his charade” to the real SEALs. This is likely to be sufficient to shut him down, or at least convince him to go elsewhere to spin his yarns.

I would note that the man in the photograph you provided is also wearing an AIR CREWMAN pin, which means that the wearer is trained and qualified to serve as an air crewman aboard a Navy helicopter or fixed wing aircraft. I would note that the men who are trained/qualified as air crewmen are not eligible for SEAL Training/Duty; the Navy spends so much money training them to be air crewmen that they are loath to simply throw that investment away and subsequently spend another huge sum of money training them to be a SEAL.

I see the following awards designated on his chest display (top to bottom):

Navy SEAL “Trident” breast insignia (denotes award of skill code 5326 “Combatant Swimmer, SEAL” which is simultaneously noted in personnel record)
Navy “AIR CREW” wings (denoting training and skill tasking as a crewman aboard Navy planes or helicopters)

Purple Heart Medal
Navy Commendation Medal
Combat Action Ribbon
Navy Presidential Unit Citation
Navy Unit Commendation
Navy “E” Ribbon (bearing 3 “E”s)
Good Conduct with 2 stars (denoting a total of three awards… i.e. 12 yrs of “good” service)
Fleet Marine Force Service Ribbon (this one is for Navy Corpsmen who serve with USMC)
Navy Expeditionary Medal
National Defense (with a “star” which I have never seen before!)
Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and star
Vietnam Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and 2 stars
Humanitarian Service Award
Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with star
Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon with star
Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm (unit citation)
Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal
Navy Rifle Expert Ribbon (“E” denotes expert – may be worn permanently if awarded 3 years in a row)
Navy Pistol Expert Ribbon (“E” denotes expert – may be worn permanently if awarded 3 years in a row)

Navy and Marine Corps Parachute Medal (indicates wearer is fully trained and qualified to make static line parachute drops and has made a minimum of 10 jumps)

I must note that this is an extremely impressive array of awards and commendations, which is why I seriously doubt that all of them were legitimately earned by this man. He most certainly is not a Navy SEAL (which directly conflicts with his unauthorized display of the SEAL “Trident” device), and that makes me doubly suspicious of all other commendations/awards indicated by his “fruit salad” display. The picture is certainly clear enough for positive identification of both the man himself and the awards he is claiming as his. Should it be determined that he is not authorized to wear all of them, there are definitely grounds for prosecution under the provisions of the STOLEN VALOR ACT of 2005, including both jail time and heft monetary fines.

Thank you again for your concern in this matter, and for your assistance in upholding the honor of the US Navy SEAL Teams. As noted in my opening paragraph, I am a private individual and am in no way affiliated with the US Department of Defense or the US government. Despite any reports or photographs you may make/send to me regarding Mr. TIMOTHY RAY “DOC” ANDERSON’s false SEAL claims, any such information which I might pass along to the authorities in this matter would be classified as “hearsay” and therefore inadmissible in a court of law. The responsibility for reporting the individual named in your inquiry to the federal authorities as a military imposter rests with you and with anyone else who may have personally heard or received these claims from the individual himself. Whether or not you decide to report him to the federal authorities is entirely up to you, but at least you now know the truth regarding his bogus claims.

If I can be of any further assistance to you in this matter, please contact me at your convenience.

Very Respectfully,

NOTE: WHERE COULD ANDERSON POSSIBLY HAVE RECEIVED A RECOMMENDATION FOR THE NAVY CROSS - A COMBAT AWARD???

WHERE DID THE "LETTER" SOME CLAIM TO HAVE SEEN - ORIGINATE?  HAD THE RECOMMENDATION BEEN VALID - AND NOT APPROVED, A LESSER COMBAT AWARD WOULD HAVE BEEN AUTHORIZED.
