KENNETH  RONALD  COLEMAN

THE CLAIMS

AND THE FACTS

THE  ACTUAL MILITARY RECORDS

==============================================

Subj:  Marine Corps League Officer in violation of the Stolen Valor Act of 2005,
          Ken Coleman, Jr. Vice Commandant,
          Detachment #93, Hobart, Indiana

This e-mail is submitted  ...... he may "officially" notify you in writing as a member of the MCL, that a member of the MCL, holding official office, is perpetrating a fraud by falsely claiming medals for valor that he did not earn.  It is my hope that the JAG for the MCL will forward charges appropriately based upon the information provided herewith.

.... Mr. Coleman lost his position as Jr. Vice Commandant of Howlin Mad Detachment during our 2008 officer elections.  He is no longer an officer with Howlin Mad Detachment. Further actions against him are in process.

Mr. Coleman claims he received this from the Navy with his awards and decorations.

Mr. Coleman makes no mention of the stories (above) in the Howlin mad News (dated June 2007)
in which his claims are very detailed as to how he "earned' the awards. He simply blames the Navy for the "error."

 Sir,

My name is Michael Lieber.  I am the Commandant of the Marine Corps League  - Department of Indiana.
I was requested by the League's National Judge Advocate in June of this year to look into the reported actions of Mr. Kenneth "Doc" Coleman of the League's Howlin' Mad Detachment of Hobart, Indiana for possible violation(s) of the 'Stolen Valor Act' by Mr. Coleman.

After a lengthy investigation, our Departmental Hearing Board was able to determine the following information:  Yes, Mr. Coleman had been claiming and wearing the Bronze Star Medal and the Silver Star Medal.  Yes, in fact Mr. Coleman DID have documentation in his possession stating that he was entitled to these awards.

At the conclusion of our board's research into this matter, and with the assistance of our local Congressman, we were able to obtain an additional
document which stated that the fact that Mr. Coleman's awarding of these medals had indeed occurred, but that it had been done IN ERROR.

As a result of our findings Mr. Coleman has, our Hearing Board believes sincerely, agreed to cease all future reference to having been awarded
these medals, and further he has agreed to cease any future wearing of these medals.  At that point, our Hearing Board reached the conclusion
that there was NO intent to violate the 'Stolen Valor Act' on Mr. Coleman's part.

The conclusions and recommendations reached by this Hearing Board have been forwarded to the National Judge Advocate in the manner required by the Marine Corps League's National Administrative Procedures, Section  904.  Should you feel the need, please feel free to contact Mr. John Kovalcik, the League's National Judge Advocate, for verification of this information.

The Marine Corps League - Department of Indian strongly recommends that Mr. Coleman should be removed from your 'WANNABE' list forthwith.

Please feel free to contact me, or anyone else in the Marine Corps  League's 'chain-of-command' should you feel it necessary.

 Semper Fidelis,
 Michael Lieber, Commandant
Marine Corps League - Department of Indiana

He will remain posted until the Navy Personnel Command authenticates the letter he is using as actually coming from the BUPERS.
A letter was filed with them, and they were provided copies of the documents Mr. Coleman presented to us earlier.

Due to the Bruce Cotta fiasco and the Irving Schwartz fiasco (the naming and almost naming of Post Offices based on falsified documentation
originating with the VETERAN and NOT the military) we feel it necessary to first find out if the Navy actually sent the awards list "in error"
when there is no way the list was generated form his records.

Once a response is received, we will know how to proceed.

Actually, I have no knowledge of either of the other cases you have  refered to.  In fact, until Mr. Coleman's situation was brought to my

The document in question is Form NAVPERS 1650/65 from the Navy Personnel  Command - Retired Records Section in St. Louis.  The
corrected  document is dated July 11, 2006.  It was sent to Congressman Peter Visclosky of the 1st District in Indiana, Attn. Thomas Kubon.
Rather than me forwarding  this document, perhaps you should contact VETREC's to obtain it yourself.

Please go over this again for us.

You say he had a "corrected" form dated 2006 - and yet in 2007 and 2008 he was still wearing the awards and adding them to his posting on
    Marine websites?

When he attempted to "explain" in August - he chose only to sent the form dated 2006 that lists awards far above and beyond his record content
  -  and not 2004 as he states below.

Once again - we fail to understand how any clerk at NPRC could get a list of awards so wrong. The head archivist has been contacted, but it is
our belief the 1650/65 dated May 3, 2006 was falsified and NOT issue by NPRC.  Falsifying  a government document is a crime.

His "heroics" are fully described in the June 2007 issue of the Howlin Mad News - Bronze Star, Silver Star and Multiple Purple Hearts. If your
statements are accurate, than Mr. Coleman KNOWINGLY wore medals he had no authorization to wear and deserves the attention of the FBI.

For whatever reason, Mr. Coleman has stated that he did not receive the updated form.  He explained that he had not seen it until our Department
investigation turned it up. The past is prologue. The important thing here is the correct information.  You have that information in your possession
now.  How you choose to follow up will illustrate your true motive.

And so the stories in print in 2007 about how he "earned" those awards are  to be ignored?

Sorry - his claims fall within the mandate of the STOLEN VALOR ACT. He KNEW he had not earned those awards. He got caught. Now he has to face the consequences.

BINGO. By Mr. Lieber’s standard, if someone produces a form…say DD-214 showing awards not in their file, they aren’t phony, the problem rests with the person issuing the form that is in error. No way could someone have faked it…right?

I suggest you ask Michael Lieber supply you a copy of the document HE is referring to, and from where (exact address) he obtained it (i.e., Coleman ?). Mr. Visclosky, is named as having supplied the referenced NAVPERS 1650-65 dated July 11, 2006

Subject: RE: Your case against Mr. Kenneth 'Doc'  Coleman
Date:    Sun, 16 Nov 2008 12:41:44 -0700

Frankly all, I’m stunned. While I’m former Army, I’ve always been impressed at the espirit de corps of Marines, and especially their dedication to duty, honor, country…and integrity. I’m quite used to members of a Legion Post or VFW trying to sweep the fraud of a buddy underneath the carpet…it happens all the time. I’ve always been both amazed and proud that former Marines tend to be less liberal in overlooking one of their number who proves to be lacking in all these.

I guess that is not the case in the Post that proudly supports “Doc” Coleman…a thief! “Oh…he’s sorry, it was a mistake and he promises not do it again…”

EVERYBODY’s sorry when they get caught! As long as such criminal activity…and what Coleman did is a Federal Crime…the theft of honor by such frauds will perpetuate and grow.

I expected much more from an MCL Post.

Sincerely,

Doug
