There was little surprise among area veterans when they learned Darrel M. Daugherty was not listed in the Pentagon’s database of POWs/MIAs. Local veterans, many of whom were part of school programs and memorial ceremonies with Daugherty, said they were disappointed and hurt that a veteran would try to gain attention by exploiting POWs. Bill McClure, a Korean War veteran and commander of the Wesley Phelps VFW in Hartford, said he used to introduce Daugherty as a POW and was proud to have him as a member of the organization. “I’ve bragged on him too many times and now I feel like I’ve been stabbed in the back,” McClure said. “I feel like a fool.” |
