Marcone, Brand Source Hold Annual Servicers Convention In Vegas

By Alan Wolf -- TWICE, 10/22/2007

Las Vegas — Tourism campaigns to the contrary, what happened in Las Vegas during last month's Marcone Servicers Association (MSA) national convention is not likely to stay there.

Instead, the 400-plus attending members of the servicers trade group, created by majap parts distributor Marcone Appliance Parts, are expected to apply what they learned from the event's extensive technical-training sessions and in-depth business-management seminars to their own businesses back home.

The annual convention, held Sept. 23-26 at Harrah's Las Vegas Hotel and Casino, also represented the launch of a new partnership with Brand Source Service (BSS), the one-year-old service division of the $11 billion Brand Source home furnishings buying group. BSS held its own confab in conjunction with MSA's Harrah's event, which was followed by a joint 15-city technical training tour this fall.

Highlights of the MSA convention included the announcement of multiple new programs under the heading “Game Changers Designed to Increase Profitability,” plus a raffle that raised more than $6,000 for the Bob Hope USO. Raffle winner Terrance Timmons of Quality Maytag in Prescott, Ariz., won a Honda all-terrain vehicle donated by Marcone Appliance Parts, while J.R. Zirkelbach of BSS won a stainless-steel gas grill donated by Fisher & Paykel. Michael Teilmann, retired Brig. General and executive director of the Bob Hope Hollywood USO in Los Angeles, was the keynote speaker.

STEVE LONGMUIR: WRITER/DIRECTOR/PRODUCER

"COMEDY SALUTE TO VETERANS" was a fund-raiser to raise money for Personal Care Technology, a non-profit organization that provides caregiver services to the disabled in Los Angeles. The event was produced by Bandwagon Entertainment (founded by Steve Longmuir and Frank Payne), in conjunction with the L.A. Dept. of Military and Veterans Affairs, who designated three honorees to receive honorary military awards, which were presented at the end of the evening. The gala event featured guest appearances by Greta Peck, Sybil Brand, Director of the V.A. Col. Joseph N. Smith (Ret.), and Earnest Hamilton, Director of Personal Care Technology. Preceeding the awards ceremony was a banquet and a comedy salute by some of L.A.'s top stand-up comics, including Rick Overton, Craig Robinson and many more. The honorees who received awards were General R. S. Teilmann (Ret.), Colonel Lewis L. Millet (Ret.) and Colonel Larry E. Grant (Ret.). The final award, a Purple Heart, was awarded to Captain Stacy Georgilas, U.S. Airforce, who served in Bosnia.

Wedelstedt Sentenced to Federal Prison Camp
By: Dan Miller as Reported by Mark Kernes (Courtesy of avn.com)
Posted: 3/3/2006

Dallas, Texas - Goalie Entertainment owner Edward Wedelstedt on Thursday was sentenced to 13 months in Englewood Federal Prison Camp in Littleton, Colorado as part of his guilty plea to one count of obscenity.

There was no fine imposed, however he will be making restitution to the government in the amount of $325,000. That money will be obtained from the sale of three adult retail properties that he owns and has now forfeited in Abilene, Amarillo and Merkel, Texas.

All the other charges against Wedelstedt and his wife Vivian, and Goalie Entertainment Holdings have been dismissed with prejudice, meaning they cannot be brought against him again. Wedelstedt also must perform 120 hours of community service to be completed within one year of his release.

In November, he pled guilty to two counts in a 23-count indictment. The first count was for interstate transportation of obscene material with intent to distribute. He also pled guilty to a tax offense.

“With respect to the tax offense, Mr. Wedelstedt conceded that between 1997 and 1999 he gave some employees cash bonuses in which those employees did not pay their own taxes on," his attorney Hank Asbill noted after the plea. "During each of those three years, the average tax loss to the government was $40,000 a year. During that same time, Eddie and his company overpaid their taxes by many hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not low millions of dollars.”

U.S. District Court Judge Ed Kinkeade handed down the sentence in Courtroom 1625 of the Earle Cabell Federal Building of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas.

The expectation is that Wedelstedt will not spend the full 13 months in prison camp.

Arthur Boten, a Goalie employee from Des Moines, Iowa, who was a co-defendant in the case, was sentenced at the same time. Boten also pled guilty and his sentence was two years probation and a $2,000 fine. He has to do 100 hours of community service.

The court day contained some unusual moments, such as the court crier opening the session by saying, “Let us pray. God bless the United States and this honorable court.”

After the sentencing, Judge Kinkeade remarked that Wedelstedt is “64 years old and has most of his life in front of him.”

“You’ve done things about half right,” Kinkeade told him. “I want you to do the right thing for the right reasons” which apparently includes getting out of the adult business.

The judge continued, “When you’re sitting in front of the fire, you can’t feel great about your work. You need to do something else with your life.”

Then off the record, the judge made additional, opinionated remarks. He said he saw the videos named in the obscenity count, and commented, “That’s somebody’s father. That’s somebody’s sister.”

He added, “I’m going to be very stiff on you guys to follow the rules,” indicating if there were any future infractions while in prison or during the course of his probation that he would come down hard. Judge Kinkeade said he would be following the Eddie’s Kids website and hoped he didn’t see any “smut” on it.

Representing Wedelstedt in court were Asbill and attorneys Barry Boss and Gary Sims, all of whom are from Washington D.C. The government was represented by Linda Groves, Steve Grocki (from the Department of Justice) and John Della Garza.

There were additional members of the defense team in the audience, including Dallas attorney Richard Anderson, Brad Reich and Marlo Cadeddu. Wedelstedt’s wife Vivian, his daughter Beverly and Connecticut attorney Dan Silver were also present along with about five people who appeared to be with a religious right organization.

Mike Teilmann, a retired U.S. general, appeared as a character witness on Wedelstedt’s behalf. Teilmann now works with the USO at Los Angeles International airport where he assists incoming enlisted men.

PILGRIM For hundreds of thousands of military families, the USO is an invaluable source of help and support.
Now, there are more than 12,000 USO volunteers all over the world, working hard for the troops and their families. But among those volunteers, one man's dedication stands out.
Jen Rogers has the story of Michael Teilmann.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JEN ROGERS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over) This is probably what comes to mind when you think of the USO stars like Bruce Willis, Mariah Carey and Robin Williams, entertaining troops around the globe. ROBIN WILLIAMS, COMEDIAN Good morning, Bagram!

ROGERS While big names get the cheers, it's the USO's smaller programs that may make the biggest difference.

The 63-year-old nonprofit offers childcare, an emergency travel fund and over 120 centers that are safe havens for military men and women all over the world.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE I have a place to relax. I mean, that just eases your mind so you're not thinking about training. I really couldn't picture what I'd didn't have a USO.

ROGERS It's a sentiment echoed over and over again by members of the armed forces.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE It's like a home away from home for me.

ROGERS Since 9/11, military deployments have increased substantially, putting pressure on the USO to respond, as well.

MICHAEL TEILMANN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, THE BOB HOPE USO AT LAX When I first joined the board of the USO I would say, "Gee, you know, you guys are only open two or three days a week down there and only for several hours a day. And I think you ought to do this, and I think you ought to do and the other."

And pretty soon I got a call from one of the boys who said, "You talk a good game, Teilmann. Why don't you go out and do something about it?"

ROGERS So he did. Under retired Brigadier General Michael Teilmann's management, the USO center at Los Angeles International Airport expanded its hours to seven days a week, 18 hours a day.

TEILMANN Where are you headed off to?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE For the Air Force base, Texas.

ROGERS Keeping this USO running is just Teilmann's day job. He also moonlights as a producer for USO events overseas.

TEILMANN We hit the bases, and the guys and gals when they're in there in their work space and they're out in the field or wherever and all of a sudden they see this group of very famous people coming by, it's a great morale booster.

ROGERS Teilmann has one day off a week, and he says he needs it for his other passion, the American Volunteer Reserve, an organization he created to get retired military personnel back into uniform.

TEILMANN Seventeen-hundred veterans are dying each and every day, and the armed forces are only able to provide military funerals for a small portion of those.

So we are -- that's one of our principle missions, is to find the soldiers to do the honors details.

And since 9/11 we realize that homeland security is a major, major program. It's something we've got to support.

ROGERS Supporting it all leaves Teilmann with a full plate, but it's one other volunteers say he can easily handle.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE I think it's his personality. He's very upbeat, always a smile, very energetic, just that sort of positive outlook that he can do it. He can do it.

ROGERS For Teilmann, it's a way to stay active without being on active duty.

TEILMANN I just enjoy being able to still contribute at my advanced age!

ROGERS And these young guys seem pretty grateful for that contribution.

Jen Rogers, CNN financial news, Los Angeles.

LETTER FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY  RE: UNIFORM AND DECORATIONS

From ....... @ca.ngb.army.mil

Subject US Embassy, Beijing Brigadier General Teilmann

Mr. ,

Thank you for the attached news article and photos of Mr. Teilmann, apparently at the United States Department of State Embassy in Beijing, China, and wearing what appears to be a United States Army uniform with the rank of Brigadier General.

Mr. Teilmann is not a member of either California's National Guard or State Military Reserve. He is retired from the Reserve of the United States Army (National Guard) as a Major. The patches on his beret and shoulder do not appear to be those of any units associated with California's National Guard or State Military Department.

I speculate that Mr. Teilmann joined an unofficial militia (perhaps in South Carolina). I also speculate that he is using his association with the USO to impersonate a General Officer that is recognized by the United States government, in the types of activities depicted in the photographs.

In addition to the Los Angeles Bob Hope Chapter of the USO, I encourage you to submit complaints to the following

1. Honorable Colin Powell                          2.  Director Robert Mueller                                  3. Mr. Edward A. Powell, Jr.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE    CONTACT:
Wednesday, December 11, 2002    Craig Mandeville, Director
(562) 496-5806

Press Release

(Irvine, Ca.) In response to public appearances on federal property and at local civic events by a group known as the U.S. Army Volunteer Reserve, the Orange County Chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America today asked the FBI and California State Department of Corporations to investigate this group for wearing military uniforms and imitation decorations which are in violation of the United States Code that prescribes the regulations and penalties for wearing the uniform of a member of the armed forces. The volunteers have been appearing in Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego Counties, and also have been distributing uniforms and rank to immigrants in Southern California that served in the former Soviet Union and Vietnam, that have never served in the U.S. armed forces.

“Anyone can do what they are doing,” said Craig Mandeville, Director of the Orange County Chapter, “they are deceiving our veterans, our families and the public at large with uniforms and rank that they did not earn.” As a result of recent articles that have appeared in the press about the group, the invitation to the head of the volunteers to join in the upcoming TET parade in Little Saigon was recinded.

The Chapter also has inquired about the volunteers’ ties to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Department of Homeland Security, and confirmed that they have no relationship with either agency as they claim on their web site. VVA Chapter President Bill Mimiaga indicated that “this group now has wiggled its way into our National Cemeteries in Riverside and San Diego to serve on burial details, and they are deceiving our veteran families. We have today requested the Secretary for the Department of Veteran Affairs to ban this group immediately and to have any of its members arrested if they should appear in uniform at any of our cemeteries, despite their so called good intentions.”

In addition to the burial details and public appearances, the volunteers are now also offering courses through links on its web site for the Marine Corps Institute, the Red Cross, and the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary Civil Air Patrol, the Army Institute of Professional Development, and FEMA. “This group is especially dangerous when you consider that they are wearing these uniforms and decorations, confusing our public officials, the public at large, and our men and women that currently serve in the armed forces and at a time when our country is involved in a war on terrorism. What would happen if they suddenly decided to show up wearing their uniforms after an incident? We want to put an immediate halt to it, because they have no authority to do what they are doing."

The Orange County Chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America has over 100 members that served in either Vietnam or during the Vietnam era. Other southern California Chapters are located in Riverside, San Diego, and Los Angeles. Its national organization has over 50,000 members located in 525 Chapters from Guam to the Virgin Islands. It is the only Vietnam Veteran service organization to serve veterans and their families that was approved by congress in 1979. The Orange County Chapter of VVA is also affiliated with over 800 Vietnamese Veterans in Orange County who also served during the war for the former Republic of Vietnam until the war ended in 1975.

Two more Generals that never earned this rank are:

BRIGADIER GENERAL MICHAEL R. S. TEILMANN
COMMANDING GENERAL

 UNITED STATES ARMY VOLUNTEER RESERVE
 AMERICAN VOLUNTEER RESERVE

Brigadier General Michael R. S. Teilmann was appointed Commanding General of the United States Army Volunteer Reserve’s (USAVR) 9th Support Brigade upon formal activation of the unit 1 January 2000. Headquartered in Los Angeles, CA, the 9th Brigade held command responsibility for units of volunteer soldiers providing general support, civil affairs and honors duties in the states of California, Arizona, Nevada and Hawaii.

In March 2002 the organization was re-designated as Headquarters, U.S. Army Volunteer Reserve/American Volunteer Reserve. Concurrently, command responsibility increased to include the complete United States, its Territories and Protectorates. With the advent of the War on Terrorism, another primary mission – that of Homeland Security – was established.

General Teilmann’s most recent military assignments included service as a brigadier general on the staff of the Adjutant General of South Carolina, where he served as Military Media Directorate for the Support Command of the South Carolina National Guard, and prior to that as Commander of the 40th Infantry Division (Mech) Support Brigade, the senior field command in State service for the Military Department of the State of California. This followed more than twenty-five years of active and reserve federal service in the Armed Forces of the United States.

Born in San Francisco, California, General Teilmann received his initial formal education in the Parochial School Systems of San Francisco and Marin Counties. He attended college at the University of California, Berkeley and in the United Kingdom, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Journalism from Rochdale College. He was awarded a Ph.D in Information Technology and Management from the International Academy for Integration of Science and Business in Moscow in May of 2001 and also holds an Honorary Doctorate from the Peninsula Institute of Information, Technology and Business. In the Fall of 2001, he was elected an Advisor of the International Academy of Sciences, Education, Industry and Arts.

General Teilmann’s experience in the Armed Forces includes duty in a variety of command as well as staff positions from Army National Guard Detachments through Numbered Army Headquarters level, to Department of Defense and Joint Service Activities. He served as a Public Affairs special projects officer, and later in Psychological Warfare for the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV). He also served two assignments in Europe on active duty with NATO for the National Guard Bureau at the Pentagon.

Originally commissioned in the Infantry, later serving in the Adjutant General and Civil Affairs Corps, General Teilmann’s military career has included service in the United States Army, the California Army National Guard, the U.S. Army Reserve and the California State Military Reserve. He served as an Army National Guard Public Affairs Detachment Commander and Chief of Public Affairs for the California Army and Air National Guard; Chief of Media Relations, Chief, Field Liaison Branch and also as Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Staff Officer for the Sixth United States Army; Public Affairs Officer, then Executive Officer for HQ. 4th Battalion (Provisional) 6396th RTU, USAR; Community Relations Officer, 6325th IMA Detachment (PA), USAR, Office of the Secretary of the Army; Executive Officer and Commander for the Joint Service Staff Group RTU, USAR; Commander, 40 ID (M) Support Brigade and Commanding General of the 9th Brigade, USAVR. His present assignment is as Commanding General, Headquarters, U.S. Army Volunteer Reserve/American Volunteer Reserve.

He has also been awarded the Army National Guard Recruiter’s Badge and the Army Expert Marksmanship Badge. He received the Legion of Merit from the USAVR in January 2002.

An award-winning television producer and writer in his civilian endeavors, General Teilmann is president of Hollywood International Productions, Ltd., Hollywood, California.

And last, Brigadier General Ortiz

Father (BG) Michael Ortiz, a Catholic Priest in San Diego, CA, is the USAVR Chief of Chaplains.  Fr. Ortiz serves on the National Staff of the USAVR and coordinates USAVR Chaplain’s  Services Programs throughout the nation.
