Seaman Apprentice John Anthony Winkler entered the U.S. Navy from Virginia and served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard (CVA 31). He was assigned a mess cooking detail aboard the ship. On November 23, 1965, he was marked missing when he failed to report at the morning muster, after having last been seen in the mess cook berthing compartment the previous evening. A thorough search of the entire ship was conducted, but SA Winkler could not be found. He remains unaccounted for. Today, Seaman Apprentice Winkler is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
