Return to Service Member Profiles

Lance Corporal Thomas Patrick Mahoney III, who joined the U.S. Marine Corps from California, was a member of Company B of the 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. He was stationed at an outpost in the vicinity of Hill 881 in the Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam, (GC) XD 773 441. On July 6, 1968, he was shot and killed by the enemy while outside the perimeter of his outpost. His fellow marines heard the gunfire and his cries for help, and an element was dispatched to investigate. They located LCpl Mahoney’s body at the bottom of the hill, but heavy enemy fire made recovering the remains impossible. Lance Corporal Mahoney's remains have not been located since, or identified among remains returned to U.S. custody after the war. Today, Lance Corporal Mahoney is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
